I suppose the "True Video" iPod will be released at a special event along side the iPhone and PowerBook G5? :p

(Well, two out of the three would be nice.)

I guess its coming with 64 GB... You have to decide to buy an iP5 with 32GB or an shiny white iP4 with 64 GB - your call.

As far as I know there was even a rumor about 64 GB storage.

Yes, I agree, smartphones are going to replace dedicated GPS devices.

I use OVI Maps... which is rather good -
    * download maps without touching a computer ( map updates are free.. unlike Garmin )
    * maps are on the device - no constant internet connection. So Maps still work when no cell coverage.
    * traffic warnings
    * free turn by turn voice navigation
    * city guides etc

On my Nokia phone over a GPS - because its more convienient.

However, Garmin et al will adapt to the competition and will survive. The market will be large enough for quite some time - not everyone will buy iPhone or Android phone.

I think smartphone are already impacting GPS sales. Such premium services that Garmin etc offer such as Traffic will become free for smartphones - these companies have to compete.

I am in agreement with Chaz on this. With Android and iOS having so much built into their portable OS now, I kinda think the days of dedicated GPS devices are going to be limited.

It is sad, but I do see more and more iPhones, and Android devices attached to front windshields were a normal GPS usually goes.

The only reason I feel that way is the likes of Nokia with their already solid mapping available for Symbian and undoubtedly WP7 once it hits, Google Maps and the potential for an Apple designed mapping solution that would be available to literally millions of smartphone users. Not seen nothing from RIM or Palm yet tho.

With Smartphone ownership on the rise, from affordable symbian/android handsets to premium iOS/WP7 and Android handsets, there will be a lot of people out there with a gps solution in their pockets.

Perhaps im jumping the gun but i think it could really affect stand alone units. :)

Despite all the marketing hype about Microsoft having an entire "Mac team" that's dedicated to the platform writing all this software? It feels more like they're pressured by the rest of the company to "not make Office for Mac TOO good or functional", lest it hurt sales of Windows. (More profitable for Microsoft if they can get Mac users to buy Office for Mac first, decide it doesn't do everything they need, and proceed to buy a Windows license AND an Office for Windows license to run it virtualized, or even to buy a separate Windows PC for the purpose.)

Back in the PowerPC days, I remember the excuse for poor spreadsheet performance was constantly "a limitation of the CPU itself, because of the way it handles math functions internally". But now we've been on Intel for a while, and we're still not seeing good performance in Excel for OS X.

Whilst the overall suite is much better than the 2008 version I have to say the performance of Excel on the Mac is just extremely poor when copying chunks of rows to another sheet it's just painful.

Only talking maybe 10,000 rows and it borks - having used Excel on Windows for many years, including the latest versions capable of handling million row spreadsheets, the performance overall of the Mac version is crap.

Very near to being a great suite but I wonder if they have the inclination to resolve and improve.....

Do your research, O.P. "Budweiser" correctly describes a beer brewed in, or in the style of beers brewed in Bhmisch Budweis in the Czech Republic.

Budweiser Budvar is simply one producer of 'Budweis' beer and has actually been producing a Budweis for LESS TIME than Anheuser-Busch, so therefore it is nowhere near the 'original' Budweis.

That is not to say that one is better than the other, I don't have a great opinion on the matter.

However, I would say that Bud, the US product, has its place as a refreshing liquid when ice cold. I have very fond memories of sitting in Central Park on a blazing hot day in 1989 while the 'ice man' came round on his delivery bike, the front basket of which was filled with pint cans of Bud nestled in ice cubes. I can testify that I was genuinely refreshed.

Guinness on the other hand is a whole different kettle of fish, and is one of the most clevery marketed, and misinformed upon drinks in the world. It is sold as inherently Irish, yet it started off as very much an English drink, a porter from London. It is still the most popular drink in Ireland, but certainly in my experience many younger people prefer drinking bottled beers such as Bud.

I'd rather Leopard was released later with fewer bugs and more stability, than sooner to compete with Vista (that isn't going to be adopted at the same speed anyway).

In relation to the basic editing features in preview - does that mean PDF docs opened can be re-written etc.. or am I on completely the wrong track ?

    I can't wait for a unified look, it's a mess right now.

I watched it yesterday, but it was off can on.

Phil is a really nice guy and I like him, but I don't like him as a presenter. I was SJ did the whole thing. However I don't think he was ready, and that have the other 3 help were a last minute thing which is why they were all kind of off.

Haveing that french guy talking about vista was a really bad choise. I could not understand what he was saying.

I also did not like it when Jobs was reading what to do.

Hopefully Paris will make up for these things.

I'm totally with you on the french dude, also is eyes looked shifty, could have just been a poor stream, but him and Phil just looked to anxious on stage... Phil was much more suited to the iChat lol

But SJ reading the notes, you gotta bear in mind that was an 1.5hour presentation, and with the busy schedule he has, you gotta cut him some slack.

Finally the other dude, can't remeber his name who helped to present OSX.5, Time Machine etc, I actually thought he was very good, and I got a good vibe from him, he felt so into everything he was doing and showing, now whether thats because he's a good presenter or whtther he is truly into Apples, well lets hope its the latter if SJ steps down, I think he gots the ambition to push Apple along...

    But long live the king!

    Cheers

So if I preorder one through Best Buy, I am not necessarily guaranteed to get one on launch day -- it will depend on how many come in? It is possible that there will be more preorders than the number of phones Best Buy will receive on launch day? If that is the case, is it first come, first served for picking up your preorder?

In theory and on paper, if you pre-order one you will get it on launch day. BestBuy stores will be allocated the required number of iPhones based upon the number of pre-orders they receive. The only way I could see you not getting one on launch day, is if more pre-orders occurred than were currently manufactured, the shipments get lost or damaged or stolen, or if too large an amount of people try to signup for pre-orders.

If the store only has 1-2 mobile registers, and it takes about 20 minutes to process 1 client (average will be much higher), figure 3 people per hour for about 15 hours (7AM opening to 10PM closing), multiplied by two registers. That's roughly 90 people. As rough as those numbers are, you've got to guesstimate what the chances are of that many people pre-ordering at your nearest BestBuy. At some stores in my area I would be surprised to see half that number pre-order the phone. At other stores I would expect several hundred.

A pretty fair assumption is, that if you are allowed to pre-order then that BestBuy store should be confident that they will have stock levels that will allow you to get a phone. There is a master list so it's not like buying movie tickets, you'll be able to see or ask how many people pre-ordered before you.

Guess the team that works on Office 2010 for the PC never got that memo since that works like a dream with Exchange 2003.Yes an no. Have a look at this link and see the Outlook features that are supported across different Exchange versions. They all work together of course but not everything is available: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178996.aspx.

Anyone have a link? My guess is that the optical bus may still be II but I'd be shocked if none of the busses were III considering the last updates of laptop had it.

EDIT: Found it, looks like it's all still II. Wow, that's a major drag for a machine like this, particularly one that is offered with SSD options. They BETTER not botch this on the next update to the Mac Pros (which needs to be sooner rather than later).

who needs 8gb, sheesh. i barely use 2gb of my 4gb of ram as it is. even using photoshop, I have never seen it max out.

What about the mid 2009 white MacBooks?

That was the last non-LED white MacBook. Is there a firmware update for that to unlock support for 8 GB RAM?

I have 4GB in my 15" MBP and I consistently max out. Anyone using a Mac in a professional setting (business or video/film/graphics) will always be able to use 4GB very quickly. Even when my primary machine was my Mac mini with 8GB, I regularly used over 6GB.

Trust me, when it maxes out you'll know it. Your smooth Mac becomes very unresponsive and sluggish...

IMO Apple built this giant datacenter in order to launch its own search engine to compete with Google. Why ?

    1) When Google launched Android, S. Jobbs became furious, saying that Apple respected Google and didn't try to go on the search market. He was calling for revenge. Soon after, Apple started to build this data center.

    2) Google is now a strong competitor to Apple, and Apple isn't free to not use (yet) Google's services, like their search engine, Google Maps and so on. Clearly, Apple can't consider that with an happy heart.

    3) This new datacenter is really much too big for just handling the few things rumors talked about : MobileME, video, etc. It's obvious they are watching bigger.

    How do you monetize Revenge?

It could have a secular constitution at the beginning, but constitutions can be changed and thrown out if the wrong people gain too much power. Islam is a threat to secularism when they gain large numbers and political power. So is Orthodox Judaism, but guarantees can be written into the constitution.
